Mazes and Masks - Seaport Community Calendar Issue 17

SEAPORT COMMUNITY CALENDAR · ISSUE 17

Mazes & Masks: Corn Mazes, Ghost Ships and Halloween Weekend on the Shoreline

This is the part of fall that moves fastest. The corn comes down after Halloween, the faerie village closes on November 1, and the haunted attractions that have been running all month play their final nights. Two weekends, and then it is over for the year.

Issue 17 covers October 19 through November 2 across all four counties we serve: what is still open, what happens on Halloween weekend itself, and the handful of things worth driving for.

New London & Middlesex Counties, Connecticut · Washington & Newport Counties, Rhode Island

Four Counties, Two Weekends

Where the next fourteen days are busiest.

New London County
Preston’s corn maze runs its last flashlight nights, Mystic Seaport stages its ghost ship, and Mystic closes out with a parade on Halloween afternoon.
Middlesex County
A haunted train out of Essex, a four-acre maze in Middlefield that ends with a beer tasting, and Annie opening at The Goodspeed on October 30.
Washington County
Westerly takes over High Street on Halloween night with giant puppets and a costume parade; Wakefield stages a zombie comedy.
Newport County
Trick-or-treating inside The Breakers, a free town festival at Fort Getty in Jamestown, and a hay wagon through the Norman Bird Sanctuary after dark.

Three Mazes, One Autumn Night

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Eight Acres, Sixteen Stations, One Field in Preston

A corn maze is a strange kind of business. You plant a crop, cut a design into it that only makes sense from the air, and then sell people the experience of being lost in it for two hours. Preston Farms has done exactly that for 27 years on Route 2, and the field has become one of the fixtures of fall in this part of the state — voted Connecticut’s best by The Day.

This year’s design is cut to the theme “America 250 ‘Ears’ of Freedom,” marking the semiquincentennial. Sixteen stamping stations are hidden through the rows, and finding all of them takes most people between an hour and a half and three hours. Your ticket is a season pass, so if the light goes before you find them all, come back.

The best version is the flashlight maze. Every Friday and Saturday night from 6 p.m., the farm adds live music, bonfires and food trucks, and the same eight acres become considerably harder to solve.

Two Weekends, and Then the Corn Comes Down

Everything in this issue has a hard stop. The mazes get cut, the faerie village packs up on November 1, and the haunted attractions that have been running since the first week of October play their last nights and go dark for eleven months.

Pick one Friday and one Saturday. Bring a flashlight that actually works.
