The Haunted Harbor: Ghost Ships, Faerie Villages & October on the Shoreline

October is the month the shoreline keeps for itself. The boats come out of the water, the farm stands fill with squash, and the calendar shifts from harvest fairs in the first weekend to lanterns, ghost stories and a whaleship that has been lost at sea for two hundred years by the last.

This issue gathers the events we could confirm for October and early November 2026 across all four counties we serve, plus a short list of traditions whose dates have not been announced yet.

Covering New London and Middlesex Counties in Connecticut and Washington and Newport Counties in Rhode Island

Four Counties This Month

A quick read on where the weekends are strongest.

New London County

Mystic Seaport goes theatrical after dark, the Wee Faerie Village fills the Florence Griswold grounds, and the Apple Festival returns to Olde Mistick Village.

The Portland Fair opens the month, The Snow Goose takes its final bows at The Goodspeed, and Annie arrives for its 50th anniversary.

Washington County

Applumpkin brings a country fall festival to Ninigret Park, and the URI Guitar & Mandolin Festival fills Kingston with music for a week.

Newport County

The Harvest Fair, the Broadway Street Fair, the Amica Marathon and the Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival stack up across three October weekends.

locations on Connecticut’s new Haunted History Trail

Connecticut Launches a Haunted History Trail

Just in time for the season, the state tourism office unveiled the Connecticut Haunted History Trail on September 16 at the Webb Deane Stevens Museum in Wethersfield. It joins the state’s oyster, beer and pizza trails with more than 130 stops tied to haunted landmarks, paranormal lore and Connecticut’s witch-trial history.

That history is older than most people realize: Connecticut’s witch trials began in 1647, decades before Salem, and state lawmakers formally proclaimed the innocence of those convicted in 2023. The trail is self-guided, so it pairs well with a fall drive, a museum visit or one of the after-dark events in this issue.

The Best Month to Stay Close to Home

Summer visitors see the shoreline at its busiest. October is when locals get it back: a quiet harbor at dusk, a line at the cider donut counter, a fair on a field that was hay a month ago. Pick a weekend, pick a county, and go see it.
